Healthcare, taxes, and global warming, among other issues, are very important but by far Artificial Intelligence is the most pressing issue of our times. Although there are conflicting reports, the futurist Ray Kurzweil recently stated that in about six years, around the year 2029 this technology will give the world new entities that will be smarter than we are.
However, the recent introduction of Chat GPT and other new AI programs shows us that artificial intelligence, for practical purposes, is already as smart as we are and it is learning more every minute.
This development could result in severe or even grave consequences for humanity. It can be debated whether or not this technology should be pursued at all. However, it seems as though it is too late to stop it even if we wanted to and many people do not want to.
It is time to put this issue on the political front burner. AI must be regulated to operate within reasonable standards. This will not be easy because the world of technology is very far removed from the world of politics. It will take a lot of time and effort, that is why it is important to start now.
Of course, AI is a worldwide problem and U.S. politicians alone cannot be effective enough. Ultimately, an international commission needs to be established so that the world’s powers can coordinate for the preservation of humanity and human ideals.
What can we do?
We can make every adult we know aware of these developments. The objective is to start the national conversation. Citizens need to know all they can about the new entities that will lead mankind and what we can expect. Everyone should contact their political leaders to let them know that this requires attention right now.
Our leaders are facing a particularly difficult task because AI investors want to see a return on their dollars and because the AI itself will want to take its place in the hierarchy of intelligence. We have very little time left to be able to have an impact on these matters. Recently, some experts were saying six months.
The president should know about these developments. He should be ready to stand up for human lives by demanding limits on AI developments in the United States and by negotiating for international limits. Perhaps, he should even be having a conversation with the AI in the same way that he interacts with other world leaders.
In any case it is time to act now while there is still hope for the best outcomes. We will keep an eye on developments here; come back to this page again, news articles will be listed and the videos will change periodically.
